Welcome back, y’all!
Here we are, it’s Friday again, and it seems like the weeks are flying by! I hope everyone is enjoying this sneak peek at The Saints of Swallow Hill.
Let’s talk a little bit about what Rae Lynn and her husband, Warren, do for a living. Living in a shotgun style house in Harnett County, North Carolina, they run a small turpentine operation. This means they chip bark off the longleaf pine trees to make sap run and pool into a “box” that’s cut into the base of the tree. They collect this gum/sap, and take it to a distillery to turn it into tar, pitch or turpentine.
Did you know the process for distilling pine gum, and turning it into those various products is very similar to how moonshine is made? (imagine my surprise)
During my research, I discovered where I now live (Dunn, in Harnett County) used to have a turpentine distillery but it no longer exists, and I’ve been unable to find a picture.
