***************
The Sasser family have suffered a major setback hinted at in last week’s post. Jessie’s frustrations spill over, not only at what has taken place, but with regard to some other “shenanigans” instigated by her cousin, Oral. Recently, her Uncle Virgil found out what Oral was up to, and he not only encouraged it, he actually joined in. This leaves Jessie, her brother Merritt, and ultimately their daddy, in a real bind. Her sense of culpability over the event drives her to rectify the matter somehow, but, it doesn’t help to know they’ve become the talk of the town.
Chapter 22
I was up on the hill, stabbing at the dirt again, searching in vain, when Mrs. Brewer showed up, waving a newspaper in the air over her head.
