First Sentence Friday!

Do you remember your mother quizzing you, expecting certain answers to questions?  I sure do.  It was meant to see if I did as I was told, or if I went somewhere I wasn’t supposed to, would that sneakiness creep into my facial expression or make my voice change.  All mothers have that way about them.

My own kids say, “you have The Look.”  The Look was (evidently) even more effective than a question.  I got my answer just by watching them, how their eyes would shift, the collapse of their mouths signaling, “aw, I’ve been caught!”

Sometimes my questions were meant to feel them out, see what they really thought about a plan or idea, so I could come to some sort of decision, and I would ask in a roundabout way, not hinting at the truth behind the asking.

Dixie is in this sort of predicament, feeling that Mama’s questions are a bit of a trap.  No matter what answers she or her brother give, it will likely affect their future.

Everything had been going great until Mama started asking me and AJ insinuating questions.

  1. Great sentence as always, and I love your intro too! I surely remember my mom’s insinuating questions from childhood. She is still using the same tone on me when she wants to know what I’m up to… <3 <3 <3

    1. Mine too, Lilac! So funny. Mother’s never change, do they? FYI, it’s possible we’ll lose power here. There’s an expectation of LOTS of RAIN (I’ve seen everything from 7.5 inches up to 12 inches.) And there will be WIND – tropical force, meaning downed trees/powerlines. And it could be days before it’s back on.

Hoping for the best, while expecting the worst. <3 <3 <3

      1. Sheesh, Donna! Sending tons of blessings your way for the best to happen. I’ll be thinking of you. keep me posted. <3 <3 <3

      2. P.S. You’ve got two options because I didn’t remember what exactly I wrote and thought that my comment wasn’t showing again… You can delete the extra comment(s), but keep the extra blessings… 😉 <3 <3 <3

      3. Thank you, Lilac! Moving cushions indoors from outdoor furniture and just fired up the generator to see if it works – it did. All we can do is wait now until Matthew arrives. I’ll take all those blessings! <3 <3 <3

  2. Those insinuating questions always reach a new level after the cops leave, don’t they? They at least always seem more poignant in my memories.

You never know where a storm will go until it has gone by but I don’t think you will have much trouble. The odd eye wall this one has tells me it will just continue to weaken. Be careful though.

When is that Oprah interview again?

    1. Boy, that first question/comment of yours has me wondering…
The storm…this is true what you say. I hope you’re right. We just had an historic rain here about a week ago, so the ground is saturated. And predictions are wind gusts 30-40/40-50. I sure hope they’re wrong.

Oprah liked Colson Whitehead. Le sigh.

      1. Sorry but I left those youthful transgressions and grew up to have a clean record. I don’t even have a parking ticket unless you count my FBI file.
Colson will just be a fad. Soon, soon, very soon…

  3. Oh, I can so relate to your build-up leading into the opening sentence. My grandfather had The Look. My mom had The Look. My dad? He had The Phrase.

I’ll have to ask my kids. I’m not sure I have The Anything.

  4. Ha! My mother could cock one eyebrow and bring her three miscreants into line without uttering a word. Failure to heed the brow ended in an immediate display of parental superiority. The brow– *shudders* –I’m still earning it on a semi-routine basis.

  5. Just a note to let you know that you are high in our thoughts. Hope it was just you electricity that got blown away and that you are safe and comfortable with plenty of food and water.

I most hope that things will be heading back to normal for you soon.

    1. Thank you for that Craig. We just had our power restored, but internet/cable out – on a hotspot here…limited access. Rivers still yet to crest – that should happen today for some, by Friday for others. Your thoughts are appreciated.
