First Sentence Fridays AND Free Book Friday – Chapter 10

FRIDAY!!! Need I say more?

***************************************************

I talk a lot about the research I do when it comes to writing my stories. As a novelist of historical (southern) fiction, I am not alone in this.

In The Saints of Swallow Hill, I was back to researching vehicles again – I’d surely done a lot of that in The Moonshiner’s Daughter.

Here’s what Warren and Rae Lynn Cobb’s farm truck might have looked like – matter of fact, another reason I love this picture is it could have been taken for a particular scene in the book.

This is a 1929 Ford. Travel by vehicle in those days was a challenge for many reasons. Roads weren’t in the best shape, and forget about the system of highways like we have now. Also, and quite honestly, while Ford Motor Company was pumping out vehicles left and right, I don’t believe comfort was quite at the top of the list – or it didn’t seem like it. Add to that how remote, and distant service stations were, and the fact that many areas were still underdeveloped, one had to plan any sort of trip carefully, and hope nothing happened.

Chapter 10

Rae Lynn

She was going along at forty-five miles per hour when she swerved to avoid a pothole and something hit the front end.
